"Magoga hace referencia a la especie de gaviota más grande de Venecia"
El poderoso trío Stoner/Rock The Magogas lanzó su nuevo álbum “48 Moons” el 29 de marzo a través del sello discográfico Go Down Records. Made in Metal habla con Fabio, el bajista de la banda.
MiM: ¿Cuáles fueron los inicios de la banda? ¿Cómo surgió la idea de crear la banda y cuál es el concepto detrás del nombre de la banda?
TM: La banda se formó en 2020. El guitarrista Jacopo y yo nos conocimos en un sitio web para músicos. Estaba buscando empezar a tocar de nuevo después de una larga pausa y formar una nueva banda de rock. Jacopo estaba en la misma situación, y un par de mensajes después nos juntamos en un local de ensayo con otro amigo mío en la batería. Congeniamos de inmediato, pero desafortunadamente el baterista renunció poco después. Publicamos un nuevo anuncio en el mismo sitio y Lisa respondió. Acababa de volver a tocar la batería después de una pausa por maternidad. Empezamos a reunirnos semanalmente para jugar sin expectativas, puramente por diversión y para escapar de nuestras rutinas y responsabilidades diarias. Ya no somos adolescentes, pero disfrutamos cada minuto. El confinamiento por la pandemia mundial no nos impidió componer; Continuamos haciendo llamadas grupales, enviándonos nuevos riffs y manteniendo el fuego encendido. Cuando terminaron las restricciones, ¡estábamos llenos de energía y emoción!
El nombre “Magoga” proviene de mi dialecto y hace referencia a la especie de gaviota más grande que reside en Venecia. Me gustan estas aves porque se ven elegantes y gráciles en el cielo, pero pueden ser bastante desordenadas en el suelo. Esta dicotomía me parece fascinante y la palabra suena agradable al oído. Esa es la sencilla historia detrás de Los Magogas.
MiM: “48 Moons” (Go Down Records, 2024) presenta un sonido sucio, áspero y áspero. Cerca de Garaje y Ruido con una base Grunge media. ¿Es eso así? ¿Cómo lo ves?
TM: Pasamos un tiempo considerable buscando nuestro sonido único y quedamos satisfechos cuando finalmente alcanzó una actitud increíble. Creo que nuestra música pertenece al género Stoner Rock con influencias de Space Rock, Grunge y tal vez también algunos toques de Garage Rock. Lisa y yo éramos adolescentes en los años 90 y resuenan fuertemente con esas vibraciones. Jacopo es más joven y aporta su gusto musical más sofisticado a la mezcla.
MiM: ¿Cómo es el proceso creativo a la hora de componer material nuevo? ¿Es un proceso colaborativo entre todos o recae en una o dos personas?
TM: Normalmente, a Jacopo o a mí se nos ocurre un nuevo riff y luego todos tocamos juntos. Sin embargo, nunca sabes si tu riff será el principal, el break o el puente hasta el final. Mantenemos una mente abierta y no somos posesivos con nuestras creaciones. Siempre hay espacio para experimentar con otras ideas y somos muy tranquilos al respecto.
MiM: El trabajo de producción, mezcla y masterización es impecable. ¿A cargo de quién estaba? ¿En qué estudio de grabación se realizó la grabación del disco?
TM: Todo el trabajo para este proyecto fue realizado por Ruggero Pol en el Garage Recording Studio en Conegliano. Ruggero es un ingeniero de sonido muy conocido y respetado, y aunque en ocasiones lo hayamos vuelto un poco loco, creemos que el trabajo que hizo fue sobresaliente. Cabe mencionar que Ruggero también es pareja de Lisa, por lo que ha sido un “asunto de familia”.
MiM: En casi todo el álbum, escucho claras influencias de Noise. ¿Cómo lo ves?
TM: Ninguno de nosotros tiene experiencia con el ruido. Sé poco al respecto, salvo haber visto “Unsane” en vivo hace mucho tiempo.
MiM: ¿Cómo describirías un show en vivo de The Magogas?
TM: Nos divertimos mucho tocando en vivo. Es duro y ruidoso, y tendemos a tocar más rápido que la versión grabada. La intensidad de la música aumenta en todo lo que hacemos, especialmente en las partes rápidas y los descansos. Hay una conexión directa con el público y sentimos que lo estamos haciendo de verdad. Tocar en el escenario es una adicción de la que nunca nos cansamos.
MiM: ¿Qué planes tienes para promocionar este álbum?
TM: A todos nos encantaría salir a la carretera hasta que se nos cayeran las ruedas de la furgoneta, pero desafortunadamente no podemos hacer giras extensas. Sin embargo, estamos planeando dar algunos conciertos este otoño. Recientemente actuamos en un club de música legendario cerca de Milán y tenemos próximos conciertos emocionantes, como el Maximum Festival la próxima semana. The powerful Stoner/Rock trio The Magogas will release their new album “48 Moons” on March 29 under the record label Go Down Records. Made in Metal talks to Fabio, the bass player from the band.
MiM: What were the beginnings of the band? How did the idea to create the band come about, and what is the concept behind the band name?
TM: The band formed in 2020. The guitarist Jacopo and I met on a website for musicians. I was looking to start playing again after a long hiatus and form a new rock band. Jacopo was in the same situation, and a couple of messages later we got together in a rehearsal room with another friend of mine on drums. We clicked together right away, but unfortunately, the drummer quit shortly after. We posted a new Ad on the same site, and Lisa replied. She had just resumed playing drums after a maternity break. We started meeting weekly to play without expectations, purely for fun and to escape our daily routines and responsibilities. We are not teenagers anymore, but we were enjoying every minute of it. The lockdown due to the global pandemic did not stop us from composing; we continued to make group calls, send each other new riffs, and keep the fire on. When the restrictions ended, we were full of energy and excitement!
The name “Magoga” comes from my dialect and refers to the largest species of seagull that resides in Venice. I am fond of these birds because they look elegant and graceful in the sky, but they can be quite messy on the ground. I find this dichotomy fascinating, and the word sounds pleasing to my ear. That's the simple story behind The Magogas.
MiM: “48 Moons” (Go Down Records, 2024) features a dirty, rough and gritty sound. Close to Garage, and Noise with a medium Grunge base. Is that so? How do you see it?
TM: We spent considerable time searching for our unique sound, and we were satisfied when it finally reached a badass attitude. I think our music belongs to the Stoner Rock genre with influences of Space Rock, Grunge, and maybe some hints of Garage Rock as well. Lisa and I were teens in the 90s, and we strongly resonate with those vibes. Jacopo is younger and brings in his more sophisticated musical taste to the mix.
MiM: What is the creative process like when composing new material? Is it a collaborative process between everyone, or does it fall to one or two people?
TM: Typically, either Jacopo or I come up with a new riff, and then we all jam together on it. However, you never know whether your riff will be the main one, the break, or the bridge until the end. We keep an open mind, and we are not possessive of our creations. There is always room to experiment with other ideas, and we are very laid-back about it.
MiM: The production, mixing and mastering work is impeccable. In charge of whom was he? In which recording studio was the recording of the album carried out?
TM: All the work for this project was done by Ruggero Pol at the Garage Recording Studio in Conegliano. Ruggero is a well-known and respected sound engineer, and while we may have driven him a bit crazy at times, we believe that the work he did was outstanding. It's worth mentioning that Ruggero is also Lisa's partner, so it has been a “family affair.”
MiM: In almost the entire album, I hear clear Noise influences. How do you see him?
TM: None of us have experience with Noise. I know little about it, except for seeing “Unsane” live a long time ago.
MiM: How would you describe a live show by The Magogas?
TM: We have a lot of fun performing live. It's rough and loud, and we tend to play faster than the recorded version. The intensity of the music is heightened in everything we do, especially on the fast parts and breaks. There is a direct connection with the audience, and we feel that we are doing it for real. Playing on stage is an addiction that we can't get enough of.
MiM: ¿What plans do you have to promote this album?
TM: We all would love to hit the road until the van wheels fall off, but unfortunately, we can’t tour extensively. However, we are planning to play some gigs this autumn. We recently performed in a legendary music club near Milan, and we have some exciting upcoming gigs, like the Maximum Festival next week. We constantly strive to make the most of every opportunity that comes our way.
